The short festival’s rites are so designed to appease the soul of the dead for any fault committed against them while they were still alive on earth. The ‘mela’ eventually starts at dusk the evening prior with zealing devotees assembling in the vicinity of Pasupati Temple for all-night vigils. Traditional ceremonies and ritual baths commence at dawn, followed by a long procession lasting for a couple of hours through a rough and tiring course over which the participating members scatter grains.
